English Seaside Holidays - Where Should You Go?
As you would expect with being an island, Great Britain proudly claims a few of the most stunning coastlines you will find anywhere in the world. Dotted around this geographical border are some superb seaside towns that have become extremely popular over the last few hundred years and thankfully have not lost any of their beauty. It took a while for the rail network to catch up with the fashion craze that was seaside holidaying in the 18th Century, but by the time the trains were able to take tourists from the major towns and cities to the seaside towns in the middle of the 19th Century, people were coming in droves.
Some of the best seaside towns in the UK are popular either because of one specific USP (unique selling point), or because of a blend of various factors. The most popular seaside towns are listed below in no particular order, for your perusal.
Blackpool has been a popular seaside tourist destination for well over 200 years, even before the first rail link in the town was constructed in the middle of the 19th Century. Although Blackpool has quite a small number of inhabitants, it was recently voted as the UK’s best seaside resort and has something for everyone. Some particular attractions to visit in Blackpool are the Pleasure Beach theme park, the Winter Gardens entertainment complex, Blackpool Tower and the Blackpool Zoo and Dinosaur Safari. The town has roughly 11 kilometers of beautiful sandy coastline to enjoy, plus more bed and breakfasts than the whole of Portugal put together!
Cornwall is an amazingly beautiful area of the United Kingdom with some of the most magnificent vistas in the whole of the British Isles. One particularly attractive town is St. Ives, located just north of Penzance. The Guardian newspaper recently named St.Ives as their choice for the best seaside town in the UK due to its eclectic mix of landscape and natural geography, combined with its cultural offerings, promising new art talent that is displayed in the St. Ives Tate Gallery and the famous Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.
This list could not be complete without Brighton being featured as one of the UK’s best seaside towns. Brighton is a truly amazing city that emerged as a popular tourist destination during the 18th Century but massively increased in popularity in the mid-1800s as a day-trip destination for Londoners. Brighton has something for everyone, from beautiful Victorian architecture, to shingle beaches, great nightlife, incredible restaurants and scenic footpaths.
